More than 530 families will benefit from the new solar energy system installed in the Bauana community, located in the Uacari RDS (Sustainable Development Reserve), in the municipality of Carauari (787 kilometers from Manaus), in the interior of Amazonas. The initiative aims to strengthen sustainable entrepreneurship, aligned with the bioeconomy, and improve the socioeconomic indicators of the regional population. Once the system is installed, it will be possible to operate two mini-plants for the production of andiroba and murumuru oils, buriti, açaí and other products from the Amazon bioeconomy. The plant has 80 panels and 32 lithium batteries. In addition to Bauana, the photovoltaic project will benefit 10 other communities, located between the Uacari Sustainable Development Reserve and the Médio Juruá Extractive Reserve. They are: Santo Antonio, Vila Ramalho, São Raimundo, Bom Jesus, Empress, Roque, New Hope, New Horizon, Pupuaí and Gumo do Facão. The energy system is the result of the “Sempre Luz” project, carried out between FAS (Sustainable Amazon Foundation) and the Brazilian multinational UCB Power. In 2021, the same initiative provided supplies to approximately 130 people in the riverside community of Santa Helena do Inglês, in the Rio Negro Sustainable Development Reserve, in the municipality of Iranduba (64 kilometers from Manaus). The site suffered from constant power outages and, after the project, it now has a 24-hour electricity supply. This plant offers significant benefits to all local families,” highlighted extractivist Caio Gondim do Carmo, a Bauana community member. Virgilio Viana, general superintendent of FAS, explains that the system will support local entrepreneurship laboratories. “We have not only a set of solar panels, but also all the equipment that allows a mini-processing plant to operate for the fruits of the bioeconomy, on a campus for innovation, education and various other activities.” The electricity supply will also facilitate access to education, research, telehealth and other activities via the internet. Viana believes that the system is a great opportunity for local sustainable development. “All natural wealth must be transformed into value-added products in the communities themselves, as this will allow young people to stop looking to big cities as the only route to personal prosperity. This example can be replicated throughout the Amazon, and what we defend are poles of sustainable development, as is the case of the Bauana community. They create hope for a prosperous Amazon, with better socioeconomic indicators and a standing forest,” he concluded. “We have a successful history of developing energy storage projects in Amazon communities, in partnership with FAS. “We are very proud to support yet another initiative,” stated Marcelo Rodrigues, VP of Sales and Innovation at UCB Power.
