Os readjustments and tariff revisions approved in 2023 by ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) together with seven distributors of energy have already raised the electricity bill value to 54 millions of Brazilians in the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul.

From January until now, the Agency authorized as Concessionaires CPFL Paulista and Santa Cruz; Enel-RJ; Cemig; Light; and Energisa-MT and Energisa-MS to update your rates of electrical energy. The values vary from 4,89% to 10%, as determined by the Canal Solar.

Even with the elevation, part of the consumers have achieved minimize impacts to use of solar energy systems. Currently, there are just over 700 thousand photovoltaic connections in operation in the concession areas of the seven distributors.

Currently, Brazil has more than 45 energy concessionaires, which means that, throughout the year, other millions of consumers also will have the value of their tariffs readjusted. ANEEL already has prospects of approving, soon, the readjustment and revisions of six other distributors: Enel-SP; RGE Sul; Coelba; Cosern; Enel-CE and Energisa-SE.

High electricity bill

In March this year, a survey released by hug (Brazilian Association of Energy Traders) revealed that in the last eight years (between 2015 and 2022) the electricity bill of Brazilian residential consumers increased by more than 70%.

This is a higher level than the evolution of the IPCA (Broad National Consumer Price Index) – Brazil's official inflation, which was 58% in the period, and the Free Energy Market, where prices reduced by 9 %.

For 2023, the ANEEL estimates that the tariff will rise, on average, by 5,6%, but that in some states the increase will exceed the 14% barrier. It is worth remembering that energy tariffs are adjusted annually by the Agency, according to the “anniversary” of each concessionaire’s contract.
