A ANEEL The Brazilian National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) has scheduled a meeting with agents from the electricity sector, companies, and government agencies to discuss preparedness measures in the face of the super El Niño event predicted for this year.
The meeting is scheduled for next Monday (22), at the headquarters of Âmbar Energia Amazonas, in Manaus (AM). The agenda is included in an official letter sent by the office of the Director-General of the Agency to the MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy) last Friday (12).
Sought by Canal Solar, ANEEL He confirmed that the meeting took place and reported that he has been adopting a series of measures to strengthen the preparedness of the electricity sector.
In the document, the regulatory agency highlights that forecasts from meteorological agencies indicate the possibility of the climatic phenomenon occurring, which requires advance planning, especially in regions and facilities more vulnerable to extreme events.
The Agency also reported that earlier this month it sent letters to power generation, transmission and distribution companies requesting the adoption of preventive measures.
Among the recommendations are strengthening the resilience of electrical infrastructures and reviewing contingency plans, especially for the period between the second half of 2026 and the beginning of 2027, when a higher incidence of severe weather events associated with the phenomenon is expected.
What is Super El Niño and why is it a concern for the electricity sector?
Super El Niño is a more intense version of the El Niño climate phenomenon, characterized by the abnormal warming of the surface waters of the Equatorial Pacific Ocean. When this warming reaches high levels, the impacts on the climate tend to be more severe and widespread.
In Brazil, this phenomenon often significantly alters rainfall and temperature patterns. Depending on the region, it can cause prolonged periods of drought, above-average rainfall, intense storms, floods, and strong winds.

This is because extreme weather events associated with a super El Niño can cause damage to transmission lines, substations, and distribution networks, as well as increase the risk of power outages.
