A ANEEL The Brazilian National Electric Energy Agency (Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica) announced the maintenance of the red tariff flag level 1 for the month of November, keeping the additional cost of R$ 4,46 for every 100 kWh consumed — the same value applied in October.

This is the sixth consecutive month of extra red charges on consumers' electricity bills. In June and July, the flag was red at level 1; in August, it rose to level 2, and for the last three months, it has remained at level 1.

The decision comes even in the face of an excess of renewable energy generation in the country — some of which is being wasted due to generation cuts (curtailment) ordered by the ONS (National System Operator).

In a note, the ANEEL The agency stated that the scenario "remains unfavorable for hydroelectric generation," citing below-average rainfall and low reservoir levels. According to the agency, activating thermoelectric plants will be necessary to guarantee energy supply, "even at a higher cost, which justifies maintaining the red flag."

ANEEL claims that solar "does not provide energy"

The Agency also highlighted that solar generation is intermittent and "does not provide energy continuously, especially at night and during peak consumption hours." For this reason, it stated... ANEEL"The activation of thermal power plants remains essential to meet demand."

The justification has been criticized by associations and entities in the renewable energy sector, who argue that the country wastes clean and cheap energy due to a lack of storage infrastructure and efficient management of the electricity grid.

Red flag increases electricity bill while solar DG protects consumers, says ABSOLAR

Created in 2015 by the company itself ANEELThe tariff flag system adjusts the electricity bill amount monthly according to the country's energy generation conditions.

  • Green: no additional cost;
  • Yellow: An additional R$ 2,989 for every 100 kWh consumed;
  • Red level 1 and 2: An increase of R$ 4,463 and R$ 7,877 for every 100 kWh; reflecting the use of more expensive generation sources, such as thermal power plants.

    By sheer coincidence, the Batista brothers from JBS (yes, the same ones involved in Lava Jato) bought coal-fired power plants!
    If there is surplus solar energy, what prevents Itaipu from closing/reducing the floodgates during the day to conserve water and improve water levels?
    Not to mention that the red flag generates more tax revenue…

    The market is saturated with solar energy, isn't that what they say? Why the red flag? This way, they could cut the red flag or free up solar energy taxes to allow the technology to grow. But this government wants to control everything to the extreme when it comes to taxes. Blink and there's a new tax, blink again and there's an increase in the old one and yet another new class of taxes. They want to bleed everyone dry until two castes are created: the miserable recipients of taxes and the multimillionaires.
