A ANEEL The Brazilian National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) released this week the official schedule for activating the tariff flags that will be in effect throughout 2026. The schedule defines the dates on which the Agency will announce, month by month, the color of the flag that will be in effect in the following period.
Created in 2015, the tariff flag system aims to signal to consumers the real costs of electricity generation in the country. The colors — green, yellow, and red (levels 1 and 2) — indicate whether energy production is cheaper or more expensive, mainly reflecting generation conditions, such as reservoir levels and the need to activate thermoelectric power plants.
When conditions are favorable, such as during periods of greater water availability, the green flag is activated, with no additional charge on the electricity bill. However, in scenarios with higher generation costs, the yellow or red flags come into effect, adding charges to electricity consumption.
For the month of January, the ANEEL The green flag was activated, indicating that consumers will not have extra costs on their energy bill, given the positive generation scenario in the SIN (National Interconnected System).
