Expanding access to electricity and improving the quality of service in isolated regions of the Legal Amazon are the main objectives of the Energias da Floresta Regulatory Sandbox, an unprecedented initiative that will be led by ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) in partnership with IEMA (Institute of Energy and Environment).
The action aims to directly serve traditional peoples and communities, including indigenous peoples, quilombolas, extractivists and riverside communities who still live on the margins of the conventional electricity system.
The focus is to create innovative and sustainable solutions that guarantee the supply of clean, reliable energy adapted to the environmental conditions of the Amazon region.
The challenge is significant because it is estimated that 1,2 million people still do not have access to electricity in the states of Amapá, Amazonas, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima, Tocantins, Mato Grosso and western Maranhão.
14 solar energy projects with batteries are approved for the Legal Amazon
The lack of adequate infrastructure, the great distances and transportation difficulties make the supply of energy to these locations one of the biggest obstacles to social inclusion and sustainable development in the region.
With the sandbox, the ANEEL and IEMA intend to test new regulatory and technological models, allowing companies, dealerships and cooperatives to propose solutions outside of traditional models, but within a safe and supervised environment.
The initiative represents an attempt to reconcile innovation, regulation and environmental sustainability, respecting the cultural and territorial specificities of the Amazon.
To mark the official start of the partnership, ANEEL will hold, next Thursday (30) of October, the launch and signing event of the technical cooperation agreement with IEMA.
The ceremony is scheduled for 9:30 am, in Auditorium 1 of the headquarters of ANEEL, in Brasília, and will be attended by representatives of the electricity sector, government authorities and civil society organizations.
