A ANEEL The Brazilian Electric Energy Agency (Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica) announced that the month of October will see the application of the red tariff flag, level 1, to electricity rates. In practice, this means an additional charge of R$4,463 for every 100 kWh consumed on consumers' electricity bills.
The new flag represents a reduction in relation to the months of August and September, when the country was under the red tariff flag level 2. The new measure was adopted due to the low volume of rainfall, according to the ANEEL.
“Given this scenario, there is a need to activate thermoelectric plants, which are more expensive and justify activating the red flag level 1 for October,” the Agency reported.
On the same note, the ANEEL He emphasized that solar energy, while crucial, is intermittent and doesn't provide energy to the system all day long. "For this reason, it's necessary to operate thermal power plants to ensure energy generation when there's no sunlight, including during peak hours."
About tariff flags
Created in 2015 by the company itself ANEEL, The system of tariff flags reflects the variable costs of electricity generation. Divided into colors, the flags indicate how much it costs the SIN (National Interconnected System) to generate the energy used by consumers.
When the electricity bill is calculated using the green flag, there is no increase in the monthly electricity bill. When the red or yellow flags are applied, the bill increases for every 100 kilowatt-hours consumed.
Tariff flag values:
- Green: No additional cost.
- Yellow: R$ 1,885 for every 100 kWh consumed.
- Red Level 1: R$ 4,463 for every 100 kWh consumed.
- Red Level 2: R$ 7,877 for every 100 kWh consumed.
