Unit 2 of the Angra dos Reis Nuclear Power Plant (Angra 2), with an installed capacity of 1.350 MW, will interrupt power generation starting January 16th for an estimated period of 50 days. During this interval, the plant will cease dispatching electricity to the SIN (National Interconnected System).
The shutdown is related to the refueling of nuclear fuel and a comprehensive schedule of maintenance, inspections, and preventive modernizations. According to Eletronuclear, these activities are essential to maintain nuclear safety standards and the operational reliability of the unit.
Refueling outages are part of the operational routine of nuclear power plants and occur, on average, every 13 months, at the end of an operating cycle. Planning is carried out at least one year in advance, considering both the fuel's lifespan and the needs of the national electricity grid.
The entire process is coordinated with the ONS (National Electric System Operator). During the period in which Angra 2 remains offline, the operator may activate other power plants to ensure that demand is met and the energy supply to the country continues to be maintained.
During this shutdown, 56 fuel elements will be replaced, representing approximately 30% of the reactor core. The schedule also includes approximately 5 maintenance and testing activities, ranging from reactor refueling to structural inspections of large equipment and overhauls of systems considered critical for power generation.
To carry out the work, approximately 1.200 professionals will be mobilized, including about 1.090 Brazilians and 110 foreigners. The activities will take place continuously, 24 hours a day, with teams organized in 12-hour shifts, in order to guarantee the fulfillment of deadlines, as well as the safety of workers and facilities.
Preparatory work has already begun and includes setting up a support site, with the installation of containers, workshops, and temporary electrical systems, ensuring the necessary infrastructure for the scheduled shutdown.
