Atlas Renewable Energy inaugurated last week the Del Desierto battery energy storage system, located in the Antofagasta region of Chile. The project has an installed capacity of 200 MW and a storage capacity of 800 MWh.

The system uses batteries to store excess solar energy generated during the day, allowing it to be distributed during peak consumption times. The solution aims to increase the stability of the electricity grid and reduce the waste of renewable energy.

According to Atlas, Del Desierto proves that it is possible to reconcile sustainability and energy reliability. The company states that Latin America has favorable conditions to lead this global transformation, with an abundance of natural resources, a young workforce and a capacity for innovation.

Atlas also reported that it has other megaprojects under development, all incorporating energy storage technologies.

In the same week, the company announced it had raised $510 million to finance the Estepa project, the largest financing deal in its history. The hybrid project combines solar power and battery storage, supported by long-term power purchase agreements with mining company Codelco and generator Colbún.

Estepa will have an installed capacity of 215 MW, estimated generation of 600 GWh per year and two storage systems with a total capacity of 418 MW. The project is expected to enter commercial operation at the end of 2026.
