The Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) has approved and contracted financing of R$ 148,5 million for Bioo Paraná Holding SA to build a biomethane plant in Toledo, in western Paraná. The total investment planned for the project is R$ 196 million.
Of the total amount financed, R$ 101,5 million comes from the Climate Fund and R$ 47,1 million from the Finem line, aimed at supporting larger projects. The unit will have the capacity to produce 11 million cubic meters of biomethane per year. According to project estimates, the operation will prevent the emission of approximately 80 tons of CO₂ equivalent annually.
In addition to the environmental impact, the project is expected to generate 210 direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase and 90 jobs after the start of operations. Besides that... biomethaneBioo will produce organic matrix fertilizer, an input widely used in agriculture in the western region of Paraná.
Another byproduct will be biogenic CO₂, generated naturally in the production process. The gas will be purified to food-grade quality and can be supplied, for example, to the beverage industry, replacing CO₂ of fossil origin. The proposal integrates renewable energy production, reuse of organic waste, and the supply of industrial inputs, contributing to the decarbonization of the regional production chain.
“The supported project minimizes the negative impacts of organic waste on the environment by directing it towards the manufacture of energy-rich and high-value-added products, such as biomethane and CO2. The renewable energy produced and the reduction of methane emissions strengthen the circular economy in Brazil, in line with the energy transition policy of President Lula's government,” stated Aloizio Mercadante, president of [organization name]. BNDES.
Bioo's CEO, Maurício Cótica, highlighted that the funding consolidates the company's business model. “This funding marks another step in consolidating Bioo's model: transforming organic waste into renewable energy and high-value bioproducts. Having the support of BNDES once again—especially through the Climate Fund—reinforces the merit of the project and its relevance to the energy transition in Brazil. Also in Toledo, we will expand the impact with decarbonization, circular economy, and regional development working together,” added Maurício Cótica, CEO of Bioo.
What is biomethane?
Biomethane is a natural and renewable fuel, equivalent to natural gas, produced from the decomposition of different organic materials in biodigesters that use microorganisms through anaerobic digestion, that is, without the presence of oxygen. Its production avoids the emission of polluting gases into the atmosphere and reduces the use of natural gas of fossil origin, being its direct substitute.
About Bioo
Bioo Paraná Holding SA is a subsidiary of Bioo Investimentos e Participações SA, controlled by Cótica Energia, which operates in the biogas and biomethane sector, and by the eB BIP Private Equity Fund, managed by Flying Rivers Capital, a manager specializing in climate investments, created from the climate vertical of eB Capital. BNDESPar also holds a stake.
Bioo transforms organic waste from large generators in the region, especially from the animal protein production chain, into bioproducts based on the concept of the circular economy. Through this process, waste that would otherwise be discarded can return to the same operations that generated it, in the form of biomethane and biogenic CO2, closing the production cycle.
