The battery manufacturer BYD has launched a specialized educational program in solar energy aimed at riverside communities located outside the metropolitan region of Manaus (AM). The initiative aims to strengthen technical skills, promote productive inclusion, and boost the socioeconomic development of these populations.
The initiative marks the expansion of the company's investments in R&D in the state. With over R$1,1 million allocated to professional training and technological advancement in the Northern region, the project is developed in partnership with SENAI and has the support of CITS (International Center for Software Technology) and SUFRAMA (Superintendence of the Manaus Free Trade Zone).
How will the project proceed?
Classes take place aboard the Samaúma vessel, SENAI's training boat, and serve 320 students distributed across 16 classes of 20 students. The content covers photovoltaic systems, frequency inverters, Industry 4.0 fundamentals, occupational health and safety, information technology, sustainability, electricity, and practical applications of solar energy, enabling participants to work in this market segment.
In addition to professional training, the project evaluates off-grid power generation solutions using lithium batteries, capable of supplying electricity independently of the conventional grid.
This technology proves particularly well-suited to riverside communities, which rely on barges and boats and, as BYD points out, face structural limitations in the supply of electricity.
BYD's involvement in solar energy
Throughout its history, BYD has produced approximately 2,5 million photovoltaic modules, contributing to decarbonization in Brazil and reinforcing the brand's commitment to a more sustainable future through electrification.
“Solar energy is more than just a technological solution. In isolated regions, it becomes a critical ally in ensuring autonomy, development, and real opportunities. An educational project like this broadens horizons, offering young people in the Amazon access to the tools necessary to build a more prosperous and sustainable future,” explains Tyler Li, president of BYD in Brazil.
“The partnership with BYD is strategic for SENAI's activities in Amazonas and throughout the Amazon region, especially considering our more than 45-year history with the Samaúma and Samaúma II school boats. Throughout this period, we have already trained more than 65 students in 65 municipalities across the Amazonian states. Being able to revitalize this work, now focusing on new technologies through this project with BYD, reinforces our ongoing commitment to professional training and the development of the region,” celebrates Rogério Azevedo, Regional Director of SENAI in Amazonas.
BYD Energy do Brasil operates in an integrated manner throughout the entire solar energy production chain. The company's photovoltaic module factory was inaugurated in 2017, and in 2023, the first laboratory in Latin America dedicated to the complete study of the production cycle of these modules was implemented, with investments exceeding R$6,5 million.
The center conducts degradation tests, power loss tests, weather resistance tests, and performance tests of different technologies in tropical environments.
