The Babilônia Centro Wind Farm Complex, in the Várzea Nova region, in Bahia, has reached full commercial operation. The information was confirmed this Monday (24) by the steel producer ArcelorMittal and the developer Casa dos Ventos, partners in the venture.
The works, which include 123 wind turbines, were completed ahead of schedule in July, but full commercial operation was only achieved in October, a month earlier than originally planned. The investment in the park totaled R$ 4,2 billion, resulting in 553,5 MW of installed capacity under a concession valid for 35 years.
The joint venture between the two companies was formalized in April 2023 to build and operate the complex. It is one of the largest corporate renewable energy agreements in the country, guaranteeing an initial supply of 267 MW to the steelmaker, one of the largest electricity consumers in Brazil.
This initiative is part of ArcelorMittal's decarbonization strategy, which aims for 100% renewable electricity by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050. According to Everton Negresiolo, CEO of ArcelorMittal Long Steel LATAM, the early start of operations represents a strategic milestone.
Brazil's first offshore wind farm with environmental license seeks investors.
"The inauguration of the Babilônia Centro Complex will allow us to diversify our energy matrix, increase competitiveness, contribute to reducing consumption and operating costs, and in..." decarbonisation of our operations," he stated.
Lucas Araripe, CEO of Casa dos Ventos, highlighted that the partnership is progressing, supported by a shared strategic vision between the two companies.
In August, the joint venture was expanded to include the construction of a solar power plant in the same complex, between Morro do Chapéu and Várzea Nova. The new project, estimated at R$ 700 million, will have 200 MW of installed capacity. Construction is in an advanced stage, and commercial operation is scheduled for December 2025.
