Brazil and Bolivia signed an agreement this Monday (16) for the construction of a power transmission line linking the two countries, strengthening regional energy integration. The initiative foresees the installation of lines and substations in the province of Germán Busch, in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, and in the municipality of Corumbá, in Mato Grosso do Sul.
On the Brazilian side, a frequency converter station with a capacity of 420 MW will be built, in addition to 35 km of transmission lines to the border with Bolivia. On the Bolivian side, the lines will run from the border to the substation in Germán Busch.
According to the agreement, the project is already included in studies by EPE (Energy Research Company), responsible for planning the Brazilian electricity sector and providing technical support to the decisions of the MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy) for contracting new projects.
The total estimated investments for the interconnection amount to R$ 7,06 billion, with R$ 2,79 billion allocated to the international connection and R$ 4,27 billion for works aimed at increasing the capacity for energy transmission and the reliability of the system in Mato Grosso do Sul.
Energy exchange will primarily be based on surplus energy produced in each country, with the possibility of emergency exchanges in contingency situations in the electrical systems. Each country will be responsible for the financing, construction, operation, and maintenance of the infrastructure within its territory.
The signing ceremony was attended by President Lula (PT), the President of Bolivia, Rodrigo Paz, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, and the Minister of Hydrocarbons and Energy of Bolivia, Sergio Mauricio Medinaceli Monrroy.
The CTB (Brazil-Bolivia Binational Technical Committee) will be responsible for the technical coordination of the studies and implementation of the project, ensuring the integration of electrical systems and the secure sharing of energy between the two countries.
