In total, the projected investment package amounts to R$ 7,06 billion, including reinforcements for the healthcare system in Mato Grosso do Sul.
The future electrical connection between Brazil and Bolivia is expected to mobilize billions of dollars in investments in the coming years, according to studies by EPE (Energy Research Company). The project arises as a response to a series of limitations in supplying Mato Grosso do Sul and progresses in parallel with the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries in 2024 to enable international interconnection.
Technical surveys have identified significant challenges for the coming years in the Mato Grosso do Sul region, including overloads on the 138 kV Campo Grande 2 – Mimoso 2 – Jupiá transmission line, the 440/240 kV Ilha Solteira 2 transformation line, and the 138 kV Dourados–Guaíra transmission line.
To address these restrictions and, at the same time, structure integration with Bolivia, EPE proposed an expansion plan that includes both internal reinforcements and... binational link infrastructure.
The objective is twofold: to serve localities in northern Bolivia and to prepare the Mato Grosso do Sul system for new generation projects until 2039. The solution considered most suitable uses VSC (Voltage Source Converter) technology, necessary because Brazil and Bolivia operate at different frequencies – 60 Hz and 50 Hz, respectively.
For EPE, the technology represents a significant advancement, as it "allows for more precise control of power flow and greater flexibility in system operation from the perspective of voltage control and stability, which is crucial for the integration of networks with distinct operational characteristics, as is the case in Brazil and Bolivia."
In total, the projected investment package amounts to R$ 7,06 billion, with R$ 2,79 billion specifically allocated to international interconnection and R$ 4,27 billion directed towards systemic works that will expand the capacity for generating energy and the reliability of service in Mato Grosso do Sul.
"The results of this study total approximately R$ 7 billion in investments in energy transmission in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul and represent another important step towards enabling the integration of electricity between the countries, which is of strategic importance to both, as it promotes energy security, resource optimization, and economic and social development," said EPE.
