For the first time in history, Brazil is among the 10 countries that generated the most jobs in the world within the photovoltaic solar energy market in 2019. The data comes from the recent report by IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency), which indicated that the country reached 8th position in the ranking.
The historic mark, of more than 43 thousand jobs created by the Brazilian solar photovoltaic sector in 2019, still allowed Brazil to stay ahead of sector leaders, such as Germany and the United Kingdom.
The research also highlighted that the renewable energy market generated 11,5 million jobs worldwide in 2019, with the presence of the solar photovoltaic industry in 3,8 million jobs, representing a third of the total.
According to a survey by ABSOLAR, (Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy) based on more comprehensive data, total hiring in the sector in 2019 reached the mark of 60 thousand workers in Brazil.
Márcio Takata, CEO of Greener, believes that this historic brand makes perfect sense for the country. “In recent years, solar energy, especially distributed generation, has accelerated significantly. DG (distributed generation) is a labor-intensive sector and, therefore, has a very important volume of vacancies and job opportunities per installed capacity”, he concluded.
Monitoring Takata's assessment, Rodrigo Sauaia, CEO of ABSOLAR, emphasized the potential of photovoltaic energy in the Brazilian economy. “Photovoltaic solar energy will play an increasingly strategic role in achieving the socioeconomic and sustainable development goals of Brazil and other countries. It will greatly help in the recovery of the economy after the pandemic, being the renewable source that generates the most jobs on the planet.”
In terms of representation, the renewable sources sector is also the most inclusive, as 32% of jobs are held by women, while in the fossil fuel sector, this number drops to 21%.
