Electricity bills will remain higher with the yellow flag in June.

A ANEEL The Brazilian National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) announced that the tariff flag will remain yellow in June. Therefore, the surcharge of R$ 1,88 for every 100 kWh consumed on Brazilians' electricity bills will continue to apply.

According to the Agency, the decision was motivated by the dry season in Brazil, which leads to lower hydroelectric generation and the activation of thermoelectric plants, with higher costs.

"From January to April of this year, the tariff flag remained green, reflecting favorable generation conditions. In May, the yellow flag was activated, and this situation remains for the month of June," the statement pointed out. ANEEL.

Technical analysis

In the final stretch of May, energy market agents were divided regarding the tariff flag that would be adopted for June. Some experts even considered the possibility of activating the red flag at level 1.

According to Fred Menezes, director of Armor Energia, a trading company and business hub, what averted this scenario was the improvement in hydrological conditions in the southern region of the country, contributing to a more comfortable situation for the electrical system.

Despite maintaining the yellow alert level, the executive warns that the sector remains attentive to the evolution of the El Niño phenomenon, which is expected to form in the coming months.

“With the approach of spring, the phenomenon can raise temperatures and reduce the regularity of rainfall in areas that are strategic for reservoirs, such as southern Minas Gerais, while precipitation tends to concentrate more in the south of the country,” explains Menezes.

What are tariff flags?

Created in 2015 by ANEELThe tariff flag system aims to signal to consumers the cost of electricity generation in the country.

Every month, the ONS (National Electric System Operator) assesses the operating conditions of the system and defines the dispatch strategy for power plants, in addition to estimating the costs of energy generation.

Based on this analysis, the colors of the tariff flags are defined. When it is green, there is no additional charge on the electricity bill. The yellow and red flags indicate an increase in generation costs and result in extra charges for consumers.

Currently, the values ​​are as follows:

• Yellow flag: An additional R$ 1,885 for every 100 kWh consumed;
• Red flag level 1: An additional R$ 4,46 for every 100 kWh consumed;
• Red flag level 2: An increase of R$ 7,87 for every 100 kWh consumed.
