To fulfill the climate goals da 2030 agenda, it's needed reduce net carbon emissions by more than half em five of the ten most populous capitals in the country. Nas other locations, the required reduction is at least 30%.

The data comes from the survey carried out by ICS (Sustainable Cities Institute), based on SEEG (Greenhouse Gas Emissions Estimation System) de 2022.

Only in 2022, Brazil emitted 2,3 billion gross tons of gases greenhouse effect. One of the goals established by the 2030 agenda is the reduction of net emissions to 0,83 tons per inhabitant.

According to global report CAIT (Climate Watch) da WRI (World Resources Institute), Brazil is the sixth largest climate polluter with 3% of the global total, behind only China, the United States, India, Russia and Indonesia.

As land use changes, which include deforestation of Brazilian biomes, led the ranking as the main responsible for greenhouse gas emissions, with 1,12 billion gross tons of CO2e, that is, 48% of the national total.

O agricultural sector is the second largest contributor to emissions, with around 617 million tons, Ou seja, 27% of the country's gross emissions.

The energy comes in third place, with 412 million tons, equivalent to 18% of emissions. The sector of waste issued 91 million tons, representing 4% and the industrial processes issued 78 million tons, 3% of the total of the country's emissions.

Power generation

Due to fossil fuel burning activities, in 2022, the power generation was responsible for 18% of emissions of greenhouse gases in Brazil. In addition to electricity generation, the burning of fuels in sectors such as transportation and industry are included in the statistics of SEEG.

Despite this, the sector presented reduction in emissions on 36 million tons less of CO2e compared to 2021. These numbers are a result of the increased use of renewable energy sources, reducing the need for polluting sources.

Reducing emissions in the energy sectors is essential to meet the climate goals set by Brazil. In this scenario, diversification of energy sources for renewable alternatives are essential paths to reduce environmental impact.

Manaus is the leader in emissions per inhabitant

Manaus (AM) is 7th most populous city in the country and leads the emission ranking per inhabitant with 3,06 tons.

This number is due to the dependence of the road transport, which uses mostly fossil fuels and the high rate of industrial emission.

Rio de Janeiro

O Rio de Janeiro - RJ) is second in the ranking of emissions, with 2,03 tons per inhabitant.

Also dependent on fossil fuel-based transport, industrial sector and port activities, the city faces challenges in adopting renewable energy sources.

Belo Horizonte

Belo Horizonte (MG) occupies the third position with issuance of 1,82 tons per inhabitant. The city's emissions are driven by transport sector and by energy consumption.

Salvador is the best performing city

The town of Salvador BA) have the best ranking performance, with just 1,19 tons per inhabitant. The municipality closest to reaching the target of 0,83 tons.

The city's performance is thanks to sustainable mobility policies  andinvestments in renewable energy. In addition to the initiatives of urban reforestation e improving energy efficiency.
