The Federal Government has begun discussions on the adoption of small nuclear reactors in Brazil. The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) has established Working Group No. 19 (GT 19), responsible for evaluating the conditions necessary to make this technology viable in the country.
The first meeting took place last Wednesday (22), bringing together representatives of the Government and institutions linked to the nuclear sector.
Known as SMRs (Small Modular Reactors), these smaller reactors are gaining ground internationally as a new frontier for the expansion of nuclear energy.
The proposal aims to meet a range of needs, from specific industrial demands to electricity generation in larger systems, offering greater operational flexibility.
In practice, SMRs stand out for having a more controlled risk profile and for their adherence to the decarbonization agenda.
The technology combines attributes such as reliability, continuous generation, and low carbon emissions, in addition to allowing for modular and scalable installation.
Another distinguishing feature is the construction model: the equipment can be manufactured in an industrial environment and then transported to the operating site.
Working Group 19 will focus on analyzing the technical, regulatory, and institutional aspects of implementing these solutions in Brazil.
Among the points under evaluation are the definition of areas for implementation, the management of radioactive waste, the training of professionals, operational arrangements, financing models, technological choices, and the strengthening of the supply chain.
At the end of the project, the expectation is to consolidate a set of guidelines and recommendations that will serve as a basis for strategic decisions within the Brazilian Nuclear Program.
