CCEE issues first certifications for renewable hydrogen produced in Brazil

Document attests sustainability attributes of the input made from solar and hydraulics, in accordance with international standards

A CCEE (Electricity Trading Chamber) announced the issuance of the first Hydrogen Certificates in Brazil, ensuring that the hydrogen produced by EDP and Furnas It was manufactured with energy from renewable sources.

O certification process is linked to the voluntary market, in which buyers themselves determine the rules for evaluating product sustainability criteria, following the European standard.

Second Alexandre Ramos, president of CCEE, certification is a pioneering and safe initiative, guaranteeing the customer the purchase of a truly sustainable product.

“This partnership with companies represents an important step in building a relationship of trust with investors in the Brazilian renewable hydrogen market, which will guarantee our country's leadership in global efforts towards the energy transition”, he highlights.

In total, 730 kg of hydrogen were produced by Furnas, using solar and hydraulic energy. Production took place in Itumbiara plant, located in the Triângulo Mineiro.

The 295 kg developed by EDP ​​at the Pecém Thermoelectric Complex, located in São Gonçalo do Amarante (CE), were produced only with photovoltaic energy.

Both companies will use hydrogen to carry out tests in their own factories, as part of the R&D (Research and Development) program. ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency).

Renewable hydrogen certification in Brazil

The hydrogen certificate was launched by CCEE in December 2022, with the aim of attest to the origin of production from low-carbon emission sources in pilot projects in Brazil.

The program's guidelines were defined based on a series of debates with representatives of the production chain and took into account European market requirements.

In parallel, CCEE actively contributes to developing a global standard for hydrogen certifications, so that selling and purchasing countries have common criteria to evaluate the environmental attributes of the energy source.

According to the Chamber, there is a movement in favor of the evolution of rules in Brazil in a thematic chamber of PNH2 (National Hydrogen Program).

Certification system update project

According to CCEE, still in the voluntary context, the entity is developing a second version of the certification system, with the support of the World Bank. The objective of the new version is to provide greater solidity and transparency, and to this end it will feature an improved administration system.

Regarding regulations, low-carbon hydrogen is in the structuring phase, with bills in the process of being processed in the National Congress and a draft regulation being prepared in the MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy).

Companies interested in certification must fill out a form available on the CCEE website.

    Good morning,
    The first photo shows the Fuel Cell – CaC that is installed in the H2V plant at UHE Itumbiara. This equipment does not produce H2V, on the contrary, it consumes it to generate electrical energy.
    The Electrolyzer produces H2V and is stored in a tank appropriate for this gas. From this storage, H2V is sent to the equipment shown in the photo – CaC that will consume and generate electrical energy.
    They are installed side by side and perhaps this is why this inversion occurred.
