A CCCC (Electricity Trading Chamber) launched the first hydrogen certification in the Brazilian market, initial version of a document that will attest to the origin of production of the input from low carbon emission sources. The objective is to meet the demand for pilot projects to product manufacturing in Brazil.

In a ceremony to present the news, held this Wednesday (7), Rui Altieri, president of the CCEE Board of Directors, and the economist Dolf Gelen, leader of the World Bank's Hydrogen for Development program, celebrated this first step in the construction of a global market that must have Brazil as a protagonist.

“Our role will be to guarantee the sustainability attributes of hydrogen, ensure the environmental benefit of the input and increase investor confidence in the Brazilian industry. We are able to be leaders in this sector and the certification comes at the right time to boost business”, said Altieri.

According to the World Bank, today around 600 million tons of hydrogen are produced worldwide per year, but only 1% of this volume is considered to have low carbon emissions. The expectation is that at least two-thirds of this amount will be renewable in the future. In Brazil, projects concentrated in Ceará should be key parts of this market.

The CCEE certification was developed from a series of meetings and workshops with more than 200 representatives from the production chain. The version launched this Wednesday takes into account the country's particularities, such as the relevance of hydroelectric plants, and requirements of the European market, considering the continent as one of the potential customers.

At first, the product will be certified free of charge by the Chamber of Commerce and the document will have two types of classification, one for the 100% renewable input, manufactured from wind, solar or hydroelectric energy, and another for partially renewable inputs, which They are complemented by some other source, from thermoelectric projects.

Steps to Certification

Companies interested in having their hydrogen certified must fill out a form available on CCEE website. According to the organization, the process between analyzing the information declared by the producer and issuing the document will take an average of 10 days.

As it is a first version, the hydrogen certificate issued by the entity considered the concepts of Minimum Viable Product (MVP), enabling the identification of improvements in the criteria, issuance process and relationship with interested companies.

Over the next year, development will continue to address emerging market demands in relation to national and international standards, ensuring the evolution of certification.
