CCEE (Chamber of Electric Energy Commercialization) and Itaipu Binacional announced this Tuesday (03) the first public call for the realization of a competitive mechanism for the sale of I-RECs (International Renewable Energy Certificates) referring to the plant's generation in 2025.
The certificates will be tracked through the Brazilian Platform for Renewable Energy Certification and will receive the seal. CCEE OriginThis ensures the environmental integrity, traceability, and reliability of the assets. In total, certificates will be offered representing a portion of the energy generated by Itaipu, one of the world's largest hydroelectric plants.
Each I-REC certificate will come with the quality guarantee associated with the internationally recognized Itaipu brand. Companies that acquire the certificates will also be able to use the Itaipu I-REC seal, reinforcing their commitments to decarbonization and the use of renewable energy.
According to Alexandre Ramos, president of the CCEE Board of Directors, the new platform was designed to enable operations of this magnitude. "By operationalizing this competitive mechanism for Itaipu, the CCEE reaffirms its role as guarantor of the integrity of the certificates that will drive the decarbonization of the Brazilian economy in a safe and auditable manner," he emphasized.
Pay attention to dates
The competitive mechanism will be carried out online between February 23 and 25, 2026. Before that, on Thursday (05), at 10 am, CCEE and Itaipu will promote an explanatory live stream to present the qualification rules and detail the operation of the trading platform.
