Enel's global CEO, Flavio Cattaneo, stated that the company is in dialogue with authorities to seek a definitive solution to the recurring blackouts in the energy distribution network in São Paulo.
According to the executive, the main factor for the interruptions was not the direct responsibility of the distributor, but rather related to urban management. He attributed a large part of the problems to trees falling on the overhead power lines and to the characteristics of the electrical system in the Metropolitan Region.
The statement was made during the presentation of the Italian group's new strategic plan to the market. "In our opinion, this is not an Enel problem. In that case, if they continue with this type of tree, only one person will be able to handle it, and it's not a human being; it's Jesus Christ, because it's impossible to avoid the blackout any other way," he said.
According to Cattaneo, the company has been presenting improvements in service quality to local authorities. He stated that the company has managed to improve service delivery indicators in the city of São Paulo by approximately 50% over the past year.
The executive also commented on the situation of concessions in other states where Enel operates in energy distribution. He stated that negotiations for contract renewals in Ceará and Rio de Janeiro are at an advanced stage.

The statements come amid the process evaluating the continuation of Enel's concession in the city of São Paulo. The company has been the target of criticism following successive blackouts in recent years, especially during extreme weather events.
Local authorities and regulatory bodies are discussing measures to hold the distributor accountable and potential changes to its operations, including the possibility of contract termination. The company, in turn, claims to be investing in modernizing the network and improving service quality indicators.
