The state of Paraná expanded its renewable energy capacity with the inauguration of the PCH (Small Hydroelectric Plant) Lúcia Cherobim.

The project, located on the Iguaçu River, between the municipalities of Lapa and Porto Amazonas, in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba (PR), was inaugurated this Thursday (3) with the presence of Vice-Governor Darci Piana.

The plant, the result of an investment of R$421 million by the CPFL Energia Group in partnership with the Chinese state-owned company State Grid, has an installed capacity of 28 MW, enough to supply approximately 15 thousand homes.

During the works, which lasted 28 months, around 1,8 jobs were created. The energy generated by PCH Lúcia Cherobim is connected to Copel's Cherobim substation, with transmission to the Lapa and Palmeira substations.

According to Gustavo Estrella, CEO of CPFL Energia, the plant was designed with a focus on efficiency and the lowest possible environmental impact.

“The project was designed to optimize the use of the Iguaçu River, using modern engineering technology to guarantee the generation of clean and renewable energy,” highlighted Estrella.

CPFL Energia, one of the leaders in the Brazilian electricity sector, operates in the distribution, generation, transmission and commercialization of electricity.

Since 2017, the company has been part of the Chinese State Grid group, the largest public utility company in the world, serving more than 1,1 billion people in China.

With great hydroelectric potential due to its geography and abundance of river basins, Paraná is currently home to 126 hydroelectric plants in operation.

According to ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency), the state has a granted capacity of 15.668 MW, behind only Pará, which leads the national ranking with 22.393 MW.
