CPTM (Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos) put into operation, last Thursday (16), a photovoltaic solar power plant at Calmon Viana Station, with an installed capacity of 86,50 kWp.

The unit serves lines 11-Coral and 12-Sapphire and is part of the company's strategy to expand the use of clean energy in its rail operation.

The project was made possible through EDP São Paulo's Public Call for Energy Efficiency Projects, guaranteeing a non-refundable investment of R$ 519.157,89 for the implementation of the system.

This initiative reinforces the company's move towards self-generation and reducing operational costs related to electricity.

In addition to this unit, CPTM is also working on the installation of a second solar power plant at Engenheiro Goulart Station, with a capacity of 134,55 kWp and an expected delivery date of June.

This project has non-refundable resources of R$ 1.039.633,65 obtained through a public call from Enel SP, and also includes the modernization of lighting and air conditioning systems in 16 stations.

Sustainability

The implementation of solar power plants is part of a broader set of initiatives focused on sustainability, according to CPTM.

The company, which transports around 1,2 million passengers per day, has been seeking to strengthen low-carbon urban mobility by combining operational efficiency with a reduced environmental impact.

In 2024, CPTM recorded total emissions of 37.379 tons of CO₂ equivalent, considering direct and indirect sources. In parallel, the railway system demonstrated high climate efficiency, with an index of only 3,3 g of CO₂ equivalent per passenger per kilometer — a value 96% lower than that of a diesel-powered urban bus.

In practice, this means that a train journey can emit up to 27 times less carbon than the same journey by bus, reinforcing the relevance of rail transport in the urban transport decarbonization agenda.

Environmental initiatives

In addition to generating renewable energy, CPTM also develops ecological restoration initiatives, such as identifying a thousand mother trees in the Serra do Mar State Park and producing 73 native seedlings in an area of 160 hectares, contributing to the preservation of the Atlantic Forest.
