The Caieiras landfill, in the São Paulo Metropolitan Region, is expected to significantly expand its biomethane production in the coming years, with expectations of reaching approximately 400 cubic meters per day by 2030. Currently, the facility produces approximately 67 m³/day of renewable fuel.
The expansion will occur in stages, with the first planned for 2027, when capacity is expected to grow by another 110 m³/day. In 2028, the estimated volume will increase to approximately 220 m³/day, consolidating a gradual advance in the production of renewable gas from urban waste.
Use of waste
The Caieiras landfill is considered the largest in Latin America and the third largest in the world. The biomethane produced there results from the decomposition of organic waste, and the gas undergoes treatment processes for subsequent energy use.
Currently, fuel is distributed in the form of CNG (compressed natural gas) transported by trucks. With the planned new infrastructure, renewable gas will utilize the conventional piped distribution infrastructure operated by Comgás.
To enable this integration, it will be necessary to construct approximately 5,3 kilometers of network, in addition to implementing a Custody Transfer Station — known as Bio-Citygate — responsible for connecting the production plant to the distribution system.
Potential
Connecting biomethane to the distribution network could expand the reach of this renewable fuel in the state of São Paulo. Studies indicate a potential supply of approximately 6,4 million m³/day of biomethane in the short term in São Paulo.
By utilizing existing infrastructure, the energy source could be transported through approximately 25 kilometers of gas pipelines, reaching roughly 3 million users in 180 municipalities.
In addition to harnessing energy from urban waste, the expansion of biomethane is seen as an alternative to diversify the supply of piped gas, increase market competitiveness, and strengthen the energy transition with renewable sources.
Authorization
The project became viable after approval from Arsesp (São Paulo State Public Services Regulatory Agency) for the signing of the TUI (Interconnection Utilization Agreement) between the Comgás network and the Solví Essencis Ambiental biomethane production plant located at the Caieiras landfill.
