The Public Prosecutor's Office of Minas Gerais (MPMG) has filed a public civil action against Cemig (Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais) demanding action regarding the constant problems in the supply of electricity in the municipality of Nova Resende (MG).
According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, the blackouts have been occurring for at least 15 years and intensify during the coffee harvest season, mainly affecting rural producers. According to the lawsuit, documents from the concessionaire itself, attached to the case file, demonstrate the recurrence of the interruptions.
In May 2025, for example, a power outage left 729 consumers without power. In another incident, an interruption lasting almost two hours affected 149 consumer units.
Frequent interruptions and losses to the municipality.
The Public Prosecutor's Office emphasizes that the failures are not only related to severe weather events. Reports from city councilors indicate that the failures occur "almost daily," even during light rain.
There are also reports of rural residents who went without power for up to two consecutive days, even without any accidents or natural phenomena that would justify the interruption.
According to the MPMG (Minas Gerais Public Prosecutor's Office), the irregularity in the supply affects essential services, such as hospitals, schools, businesses, and public safety, in addition to causing significant impacts on the local economy.
Coffee production is one of the most affected sectors, as the shutdown of dryers due to power outages generates significant losses for producers.
Request for emergency plan and compensation.
In the lawsuit, the Public Prosecutor's Office requests an urgent injunction requiring Cemig to present, within 30 days, a detailed plan for improvements to the electrical infrastructure, prioritizing rural areas of the municipality.
On the merits, it also requests that the concessionaire be ordered to pay R$ 2,5 million for collective moral damages, an amount that should be allocated to the Consumer Protection Fund.
According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, the process is still in its initial phase. A request has also been made to publish a notice in the official press and at the district court so that affected residents can follow the progress of the action and, if they wish, formally join the process.
