Cemig (Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais) announced on Tuesday (30) that it has completed a strategic roadmap focused on the production, consumption and attraction of investments in green hydrogen projects in the state. The initiative seeks to position Minas Gerais as a relevant hub for this new energy chain in Brazil.
In a statement, the company highlighted that the wide availability of renewable energy sources in the state of Minas Gerais (especially solar and hydroelectric) provides competitive advantages for the large-scale production of green hydrogen. The strategy involves meeting both domestic demand and opportunities in the international market.
“We believe it will be a strategic driver not only for decarbonization, but also for strengthening the Minas Gerais economy,” said Denis Mollica, Director of Innovation and Sustainability at Cemig.
According to the company, the roadmap is already translating into concrete actions. Cemig currently has selected projects in strategic partnerships with SENAI, in addition to a technical cooperation agreement signed with the Green Hydrogen Center of UNIFEI (Federal University of Itajubá), focused on technological development and professional training.
Green hydrogen as an industrial and energy vector.
Green hydrogen is produced from renewable sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power. In simplified terms, the process occurs through the electrolysis of water, in which electricity separates H₂O molecules into hydrogen (H₂) and oxygen (O₂), without emitting greenhouse gases.
The hydrogen obtained can be used as fuel in sectors that are difficult to decarbonize, such as heavy transport, aviation and shipping, as well as serving as an input for the production of ammonia (the basis of nitrogen fertilizers) and for the manufacture of green steel.
