On the morning of last Sunday (21), a large fire caused the explosion of a transformer oil tank at the Cemig substation in Ribeirão das Neves, in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte (MG).

The fire started at 6 a.m. and quickly mobilized the Fire Department teams. Seven firefighters from the Neves Platoon were sent to the scene to control the flames.

The fire occurred in an oil tank with a capacity of 13 liters, which increased the risk of explosion and complicated the teams' response.

In a statement, the Fire Department of the State Government of Minas Gerais reported that, for the efficient fighting of the fire, firefighters used foam, which acts by smothering and cooling, helping to reduce the time it takes to control the flames and the risks to the safety of the teams.

Two fire department vehicles are still at the scene, and the situation is now considered under control. Cemig also reported that the fire resulted in a power outage for approximately 470 customers in the Belo Horizonte Metropolitan Region.

The company reported that service restoration began four minutes after the outage and that in less than an hour, 99% of customers had their power reconnected. In addition to Ribeirão das Neves, the affected cities include Belo Horizonte, Betim, Contagem, and Esmeraldas.

Fire at substation causes blackout in all regions of Brazil

A companhia They are already working to restore power supply and minimize the impact on the population.

Despite the scare, there is no information about victims or significant damage to the substation structure. The causes of the fire will still be investigated by the ONS (National System Operator).
