The Cuban government has announced the sale of photovoltaic systems to the population for 75.200 Cuban pesos. The sales and installation are being conducted by the state-owned company Copextel, with the promise of strengthening the energy independence of households amidst frequent blackouts in the country.
Official data on wage income shows that the average monthly salary in Cuba is around 6.830 Cuban pesos, as released by the National Office of Statistics and Information at the end of 2025.
When converted using the unofficial exchange rate widely used in the country, this salary equates to approximately US$15,00 to US$17,00 per month, which reinforces the disparity between the cost of the equipment, equivalent to more than ten times the average salary, and individual income.
The initiative is initially aimed at approximately 10.000 households of deployed workers, including education and healthcare professionals. More than 200 beneficiaries have already received the 800W systems, capable of powering basic items such as refrigerators, fans, and home lighting.
Due to the relatively high salaries on the island, the Government offers payment facilities, including installment options, bank loans, or payroll deductions. In many cases, beneficiaries depend on financial transfers from family members abroad to complete the payment for the equipment.
