EDP has taken a new step in its renewable energy expansion strategy by putting into operation the group's first global-scale hybrid project with onshore solar energy. The project combines hydroelectric and onshore solar generation at the Pracana complex, in the Santarém district, in Portugal, totaling 89 MW of installed capacity.

The project integrates a 48 MW photovoltaic solar power plant, equipped with approximately 90 panels, with the existing hydroelectric plant at the Pracana dam on the Ocreza River. The hydroelectric plant, in operation since 1951, has a capacity of 41 MW and is located between the districts of Santarém and Castelo Branco. The investment amount was not disclosed by the company.

Construction of the solar power plant began in January 2025, and the expected annual production is approximately 87 GWh. Combining the two energy sources in the same complex allows for optimized use of existing infrastructure and grid connectivity, as well as reduced operating costs and the environmental impact associated with the implementation of new projects.

According to EDP, Pracana represents the group's sixth hybrid project in Portugal and the 11th in the Iberian Peninsula. With the inclusion of the Golancz hybrid park in Poland, the company's European portfolio now totals 12 multi-technology projects.

Throughout 2025, the company also put two wind-solar farms into operation: Charneca das Lebres, in Aljezur, southern Portugal, and Las Lomillas, in the Cuenca region of Spain. In the Portuguese market, the hybridization strategy also includes projects that combine hydroelectric and floating solar generation, such as Alto Rabagão, in Montalegre, and Alqueva, in Moura.
