EDP has signed a 30-year renewal of its electricity distribution concession contract in its operating area in the state of São Paulo. With the contract extension, the company will remain responsible for serving 28 municipalities in São Paulo until 2058.
The formalization took place during a ceremony held in Brasília last Friday, the 8th, within the new evaluation model established by the MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy) and by ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) for the renewal of concessions in the sector.
The distributor currently serves approximately 2,2 million residential, rural, and industrial customers in the Guarulhos, Alto Tietê, Vale do Paraíba, and North Coast regions of São Paulo.
Investments
With the renewal secured, the company announced an investment plan of R$ 5 billion between 2025 and 2030 in the São Paulo concession area. This amount represents growth of approximately 30% compared to the previous cycle, between 2019 and 2024.
The resources will be primarily directed towards modernizing the electrical infrastructure, digitizing and automating the system, and increasing the resilience of distribution networks in the face of extreme weather events.
The company also anticipates strengthening customer service processes and the operational capacity of the electrical system, in line with increased demand and the challenges associated with climate change.
Energy Efficiency
In addition to energy distribution, EDP highlighted the results achieved through its Energy Efficiency Program, which has been in place for 25 years in the São Paulo concession area. This initiative finances projects aimed at reducing energy consumption in social institutions, public bodies, and private companies.
According to the company, the projects developed during this period resulted in annual savings of 185 GWh, a volume equivalent to the consumption of a city the size of Suzano, with approximately 320 inhabitants.
These actions also helped prevent the emission of approximately 8,5 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). In total, more than R$ 350 million was invested, directly benefiting around one million people.
Among the projects carried out are the installation of solar systems in health units and public schools, the replacement of conventional public lighting with LED, and the modernization of equipment in industries and public buildings.
Espírito Santo
In addition to the São Paulo operation, the Ministry of Mines and Energy also renewed the concession for EDP's distribution company in Espírito Santo. The contract was signed in July 2025 in Vitória, at the Palácio Anchieta, the state government headquarters.
