The partnership between EDP and Arcos Dorados, operator of the McDonald's brand in Latin America, has taken another step forward with the expansion of its renewable energy commitments.
The collaboration between the groups began with the migration of franchised units to the free energy market between 2021 and 2024. Additionally, in 2022, the companies built three distributed generation plants, totaling 6,6 MWp, to supply 35 of their own units on the grid.
The expansion now focuses on a 12-year, self-generated 7 MW solar power contract. This supply, which began in January of this year, will meet the demand of 156 McDonald's units, including restaurants, cafes, and dessert kiosks, owned by 38 McDonald's franchisees.
The energy is generated at the Novo Oriente Solar complex, located in Ilha Solteira, São Paulo. The plant is considered the largest solar photovoltaic complex in the state of São Paulo, with an installed capacity of 254 MWac.
The contract also ensures environmental benefits, including the issuance of more than 61 I-RECs certificates annually, which guarantee the renewable origin of the energy and prevent the emission of approximately 3 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year.
The motivations for business evolution are aligned with the sustainability strategies of both groups.
For EDP, whose portfolio in Brazil is 100% renewable, clean energy is seen as a strategic pillar to seek leadership in the energy transition and become carbon neutral by 2040. The goal is to help other companies use clean energy in their operations.
Arcos Dorados is advancing its ESG platform, Receita do Futuro, seeking to reduce the environmental impacts of its processes. The company has already achieved 96% renewable energy consumption in its restaurants.
According to the company, the partnership with EDP reinforces its commitment to concrete actions for a sustainable future and, additionally, generates value for franchisees by offering more efficient solutions and strengthening its local reputation. Arcos Dorados believes this move can serve as an inspiration for the entire sector.
