This week, Eletrobras completed the sale of the 500 MW Santa Cruz Thermoelectric Plant to Âmbar, achieving its goal of generating 100% of its energy from clean and renewable sources. Eletrobras currently has 81 plants in operation: 47 hydroelectric, 33 wind, and one solar.
"The divestments in thermal power plants are a consequence of Eletrobras' business strategy and allow the company to generate completely clean and renewable energy, reinforcing its leading role in the energy transition," said Camila Gualda, the company's Executive Vice President of Governance, Risk, Compliance, and Sustainability.
The deal with Âmbar, announced in June 2024, involved the acquisition of 12 natural gas plants and a project to build a gas-fired thermoelectric plant in Manaus, Amazonas. In total, the 13 units, including the Santa Cruz Thermal Power Plant, have a combined installed capacity of 2,1 gigawatts (GW).
Also in 2024, Eletrobras completed the sale of the Candiota Thermoelectric Complex, the last coal-fired asset in its portfolio. The transaction was an important step in the company's decarbonization agenda, eliminating about a third of its total emissions.
In recent years, the company has intensified its efforts toward decarbonization, establishing partnerships and expanding sustainable initiatives. Only by 2025, Canal Solar showed two recent examples of this advancement: the agreement signed between Eletrobras and Antaq to reduce emissions in Brazilian ports and the contract with Banco do Brasil for the sale of carbon credits.
