European Union energy ministers have approved a plan to completely end gas and oil imports from Russia by January 1, 2028. The measure is part of the bloc's strategy to reduce revenues that could finance the war in Ukraine.
According to the agreement, new contracts for Russian gas will be prohibited starting in January 2026. Short-term agreements must be terminated by June 2026, while long-term agreements will expire in January 2028. The text still needs to be negotiated with the European Parliament, which is debating its own position.
The proposal was designed to circumvent resistance from Hungary and Slovakia, landlocked countries that remain dependent on Russian energy. Approval required a qualified majority, which prevented one or two governments from blocking the move. Our interest is in protecting the country's energy security.“said Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
Today, Russia accounts for approximately 12% of gas imports in UEThis represents a significant decrease compared to the 45% recorded before the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Meanwhile, the bloc is negotiating a new sanctions package that could prohibit the purchase of Russian liquefied gas as early as 2027.
