The new facility is being built in the city of Förderstedt, in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, in east-central Germany. To date, this is the largest battery storage project in the country.
The initial steps toward the project began in July of this year, in a completely private initiative funded by investors NIC and X-Elio, without any government subsidies. Nevertheless, the local population is expected to benefit from the undertaking.
The company responsible for installing the system is Eco Power Three GmbH, a subsidiary of Eco Stor GmbH. With the aim of contributing to the security and stability of the electricity grid supply, the storage system will have a power output of 300 megawatts and a capacity exceeding 700 megawatt-hours.
The stored energy will be sufficient to supply the needs of approximately 500 homes for a period of two hours.
The same company had inaugurated, in June of this year, in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, what was considered until then the largest battery storage system in the country, with a capacity of 100 megawatts.
“We see energy storage systems not just as technical installations, but as essential technology for the energy transition,” says Georg Gallmetzer, CEO of Eco Stor.
"Our systems make the electrical grid more flexible, stable, and sustainable. They are the missing piece to fully integrate renewable energies and ensure security of supply in a way that is favorable to the grid."
