A Germany – one of the European countries most affected by the energy crisis caused by the invasion of Russian troops into Ukraine – held the first global auction all with import of green hydrogen (H2V), with 10 year contracts e delivery of expected fuel for 2024.
In all, €900 million will be invested in this first round of negotiations. New contests are already scheduled and will be carried out by the German government later this year, with investment of more than €3,5 billion and deliveries until 2036.
Other countries Europeans must follow the same step. With this, a billion-dollar H2V market, as until now there was no major buyer on the international market.
In this scenario, due to its favorable capacity for solar and wind generation, the Brazil ends up becoming one of the countries with conditions to emerge as one of main producers and exporters of the fuel at low cost.
One of the challenges, however, is finding a way to export it safely, since it is a flammable gas, which is still expensive to transport.
Brazilian potential
Currently, Brazil already has initiatives in the private sector and in some states to produce green hydrogen. You main projects are located in the Northeast, where there is a greater incidence of sunshine and greater proximity to Europe, which facilitates the manufacture and export of the fuel.
Some of the best-known projects are: that of the Portuguese group EDP, which produced the first H2V molecule in Brazil, in the Port of Pecém, in Ceará; and Unigel, a manufacturer of nitrogen fertilizers, which invested resources in construction of an H2V factory at the Polo PetroChemist from Camaçari, Bahia.
Another case that has also gained prominence are the agreements made by the Government of Ceará to construction of an H2V HUB in the state. The region, in fact, was the first to publish its own resolution to environmental licensing of green hydrogen plants in the country.
In addition to them, the oil company Shell reported that it plans to open a green hydrogen plant in Rio de Janeiro in 2025 and the government of Goiás announced, in February, the creation of its own policy to encourage the production of fuel and its use in public transport and in the production of fertilizers.
In Rio Grande do Sul, measures to encourage the development of the fuel are beginning to be taken, as the state has more than 100 GW of mapped wind and solar energy. The expectation is that by 2040, H2V production will add another R$62 billion to the state's GDP.
green hydrogen
Green hydrogen is a fuel produced from the electrolysis of water, using renewable energy sources.
Its use is considered fundamental within the energy transition process, as it can be used in industry to replace fossil fuels, such as gas, gasoline, diesel and coal.
In addition to having a complete course on green hydrogen (click here to find out more), the Canal Solar has also held a free webinar on the topic. Check it out below and stay well informed:
