The HCPA (Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre) received the international I-REC certificate, issued by Comerc, a Vibra company specializing in energy and decarbonization solutions. The certification proves that the 32.824 MWh consumed by the hospital in the previous year came from renewable sources, neutralizing the scope 2 emissions foreseen in the GHG Protocol.
The certification marks the first time Comerc has issued I-RECs for a public hospital. Approved by the Totum Institute, the company has been operating within the system since 2011 and uses its proprietary Carbon Desk to trade and issue certificates in the country.
Comerc is the largest trader of I-RECs in Brazil, with 8 million certificates issued and 2,2 million tons of CO2 neutralized in 2024. The initiative expands the company's presence beyond the private sector.
“The I-REC demonstrates the company’s commitment to sustainability and increased competitiveness, allowing for the neutralization of Scope 2 emissions,” says Clarissa Sadock, CEO of Comerc.
