Samarco and Casa dos Ventos announced this Monday (1st) the signing of an agreement for the purchase and sale of renewable energy through the self-production modality.
With this transaction, the mining company becomes part of the Serra do Tigre Wind Farm Complex, a project located between the states of Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte.
The contract provides for the supply of an average of 45 MW of energy, with deliveries starting in 2027. Currently under construction, the complex consists of 152 wind turbines distributed across 11 power plants and will have an installed capacity of over 684 MW.
Samarco gained national prominence after the collapse of the Fundão tailings dam on November 5, 2015, in the municipality of Mariana. The accident left 19 dead and is considered one of the biggest socio-environmental disasters in Brazilian history.
Today, the mining company claims to operate with 100% of its electricity from renewable sources and maintains goals to reduce its carbon emissions by 30% by 2032, in addition to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
Advancement of self-generation of energy
Casa dos Ventos has expanded its presence in the self-generation market, a model in which the consumer participates as a shareholder in the generating venture and begins to enjoy the benefits of the energy produced.
In recent months, the company announced major agreements with Carrefour and Omnia Data Centers. The contract with Omnia was presented by the companies as the largest renewable energy self-production agreement in Latin America.
The company also maintains partnerships in the segment with Unipar, Dow, Ascenty, and Air Liquide, reinforcing the growth of this modality among large energy consumers.
