Itaipu Binacional reported that it has already allocated approximately R$ 5,7 billion since 2023 to help reduce the pressure on electricity bills for Brazilian consumers.
This year alone, investments total R$ 1,55 billion – a value close to that allocated for the entire year of 2025, when R$ 1,69 billion was transferred. In 2024, the amount reached R$ 1,65 billion, while in 2023 R$ 793 million was allocated.
According to the company, this move was made possible after the settlement of the historical debt incurred for the construction of the power plant, which ended in February 2023. With the end of this financial commitment, the cost of energy produced by Itaipu fell significantly.
In practice, this made it possible to reduce the price of energy supplied by hydroelectric plants and to direct some of the resources to alleviate costs in the electricity sector, with repercussions on the tariffs paid by consumers.
Itaipu's debt reached US$63,5 billion.
The construction of the Itaipu Dam, which began in the 1970s, required a series of national and international financings to make viable one of the largest infrastructure projects ever undertaken in the world.
As a result, the binational entity accumulated a debt that, over nearly five decades, totaled approximately US$63,5 billion in principal, interest, and financial charges.
The amount was gradually paid off through the sale of energy produced by the hydroelectric plant. The final installment of the debt was paid in February 2023, concluding a cycle that began during the plant's construction.
With the financing paid off, Itaipu began to redirect some of the resources previously used to pay off the debt to actions aimed at lowering tariffs and reducing energy costs, helping to alleviate the pressure on consumers' electricity bills.
