A ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) approved, this Tuesday (15), the allocation of R$ 883 million for a bonus on the electricity bill that will be granted in August 2025. The amount comes from the sale of energy from the Brazilian part of the Itaipu Binacional Hydroelectric Plant.
In practice, consumers will receive a credit on bills issued between August 1st and 31st of this year, subject to their consumption having fallen below 350 kWh in 2024. In other words, the credit applies to months in which consumption was below this limit. This includes residential and rural consumers.
The bonus is a way to return surplus resources from Itaipu's operations to consumers, and the credit amount will be proportional to each unit's consumption. There's no need to register or request the benefit—the compensation will be applied directly to energy bills.
The bonus serves as a temporary relief amid rising energy prices, and its impact may vary depending on each unit's consumption history throughout 2024.
In addition to the direct discount on tariffs, the Federal Government created a technical reserve of R$360 million for Itaipu itself, with the aim of avoiding future deficits. The measure follows the guidelines of the Decree No. 12.390 / 2025, published in March, which determines greater rigor in the management of surpluses and tariff deficits in the electricity sector.
Other amounts will also be compensated in July: R$5,4 million for Amazonas Energia and R$1,5 million for CEEE Equatorial, both related to the 2023 Itaipu bonus. The transfers will be made by ENBPar (Empresa Brasileira de Participações em Energia Nuclear e Binacional SA), a state-owned company that manages assets in the energy and nuclear sector.
