Itaipu Binacional unveiled last Wednesday (8) a boat powered 100% by green hydrogen, a fuel that does not emit greenhouse gases. The project was developed by Itaipu Parquetec, the hydroelectric plant's clean energy innovation center, and is the first in Latin America to operate exclusively with this technology.
The official launch is scheduled for November during COP 30 in Belém, Pará, an event that will bring together world leaders seeking solutions to global warming. The vessel was unveiled at the Itaipu reservoir in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, and symbolizes the plant's efforts to establish itself as a hub for renewable energy research.
Measuring 9,5 meters long and made of aluminum, the boat will initially be used for selective solid waste collection on the islands of Belém. Quiet and emission-free, the vehicle also features solar panels and its only byproduct is pure water.
The operation will be under the responsibility of Fadesp (Foundation for Research Support and Development), linked to UFPA (Federal University of Pará).
With this project, Itaipu reinforces its leading position in the research and application of green hydrogen, a technology considered essential for the decarbonization of the Brazilian economy.
