A ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) approved, this Tuesday (10), the tariff adjustments of the distributors Light and Enel Rio, with increases in the electricity bill higher than the inflation recorded in 2025 and also above that projected for 2026 – estimated at 3,99%, according to the Focus Bulletin.
The new rates will come into effect from next Sunday (15) and will impact around 7 million consumer units served by the two concessionaires in the 92 municipalities of the state of Rio de Janeiro.
In the case of Light, the average readjustment approved was 8,59%, a percentage higher than that initially proposed by the technical area of the company. ANEEL – which had suggested an average increase of 3,81%. According to the Agency, the adjustment was driven by the growth of sector-specific charges.
For Enel Rio customers, the increase was even higher. The distributor's tariff will have an average adjustment of 15,46%, almost double that applied to Light. According to the ANEELFinancial costs had a significant weight in the composition of the approved index.
Electricity bill in Brazil in 2026
The adjustments approved in Rio de Janeiro follow a national trend of rising electricity rates. According to a study by Thymos Energia, Brazilians' electricity bills are expected to see an average increase in 2026 that is almost twice the projected inflation rate for the period.
The estimate is that tariffs will rise by an average of 7,64%, while the market projects inflation of 3,99% for 2026, according to the Focus Bulletin. The survey also indicates that, in some distributors, the increases may exceed three times the projected inflation.
According to Thymos Energia, the most significant price adjustments mainly reflect higher energy generation costs, as well as the high volume of losses in the system, which include theft and illegal connections.
Electricity bills are expected to rise almost twice as fast as inflation in 2026.
