The Maracanã Stadium, in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), has started operating with energy contracted in the Free Market and now uses 100% renewable electricity, with projected savings of around 36% between July 2025 and December 2027.
The change should also result in a reduction of approximately one thousand tons of CO₂ during the period. The operation is being conducted by Liven Energia, one of the leading energy management companies in the state, responsible for technical consulting and monitoring the entire energy supply of the stadium.
In addition to the financial gain, the migration guarantees Maracanã the I-REC (International Renewable Energy Certificate), which certifies the consumption of energy from clean sources, in a move that follows the trend of large public and private consumers who have sought more sustainable alternatives.
With entry into ACL (In a Free Contracting Environment), the Brazilian stadium will have greater cost predictability, autonomy in consumption management, and more tools to optimize its energy operation.
“With this initiative, we combine operational efficiency, significant cost savings, and a real commitment to sustainability. Consuming 100% renewable energy reinforces our role as a benchmark in adopting responsible practices in the sports sector,” says the stadium's CEO, Severiano Braga.
