The São Paulo Metro authorized 14 companies and consortiums to carry out studies for the implementation of a clean and renewable energy generation system to power the company's lines and stations.

According to the company, the objective is to generate new revenue and reduce energy costs, which is currently the company's second largest expense, through sustainable sources.

The company decided that companies and consortiums should develop a project that produces at least 120 MW per month, of which 60 MW will be supplied for use in train traction and power supply for stations on lines 1-Blue, 2-Green, 3-Red and 15-Silver.

The surplus will be sold on the energy market, generating new revenue for Metrô and the commercial partner that will be selected to carry out the project.

Photovoltaic solar source is the favorite

The company also stated that it will be able to make available around 200 m² of station roof area and maintenance yards for the installation of solar panels to generate photovoltaic energy.

According to the company, the studies may propose other areas in the city of São Paulo, owned by Metrô, such as land remaining from network expansion works, for the installation of photovoltaic modules, or even the implementation of generating units in other regions of the country. country.

Companies have 120 days to complete their projects, which must present solutions for the generation and supply of this type of energy, in accordance with the standards of ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency).

The best study could form part of the future notice for contracting the service. To this end, Metrô se SP will consider the best economic-financial result and the socio-environmental impact, in addition to the best preparation techniques.

The free energy market continues to grow in Brazil, but at a more moderate pace in 2026. According to data released by CCEE, more than 4.800 consumers migrated to the free market in the first quarter of this year. Despite the significant number, the volume represents a 36,5% decrease compared to the same period in 2025. But what does this mean in practice? In the free market, consumers can choose from whom to buy energy and negotiate prices, terms, and contractual conditions. This increases competitiveness and can generate cost reductions for companies. According to CCEE, the sector is now experiencing a natural adjustment after the strong expansion recorded in 2024 and 2025, when the high-voltage segment was fully opened. Even with the slowdown, the number of new entrants remains high compared to the average observed until 2023. And you, do you believe that the free market should accelerate further in the coming years?
