The ONS (National Electric System Operator) inaugurated a new space in Brasília (DF) dedicated to preserving the history and disseminating information about the functioning of the Brazilian electric system.
Named the Mario Santos Cultural Space, the space was inaugurated this Tuesday (10), at the institution's headquarters and brings together historical, technological and artistic content that shows the evolution of the operation of the SIN (National Interconnected System).
The initiative honors engineer Mário Fernando de Melo Santos, the first director-general of the ONS (National System Operator) and one of the names most associated with the integration of regional electrical systems that gave rise to the SIN (National Interconnected System).
The creation of this space also marks an initiative by the Operator to broaden the dialogue with society about the strategic role of coordinating energy generation and transmission in the country.
Permanent exhibition
The venue hosts the "Energy that Connects" exhibition, which presents the complexity of the national electrical system's operation to the public through interactive resources, audiovisual experiences, and educational games.
The aim is to make a topic normally restricted to specialists more accessible, showing how operational decisions influence the energy supply across the country.
Among the attractions is a digital map that simulates the flow of electricity between regions of the country and tools that reproduce situations faced daily by system operators.
The content was curated by Memória da Eletricidade, an organization dedicated to preserving the historical heritage of the electricity sector.
Panels and experiences
The cultural space brings together different thematic environments. One of them presents the environmental, social, and governance commitments of the ONS (National System Operator), while another displays a model of the Furnas Power Plant as a symbol of the expansion of power generation in Brazil.
There is also an area dedicated to audiovisual productions about the future of the electricity grid and the challenges of the energy transition.
During the inauguration, the book "Energy that Connects" was also launched, featuring testimonials from professionals who participated in the system's operation over the past decades. The publication brings together accounts from analysts, managers, and directors involved in the coordination of the SIN (National Interconnected System).
Tribute
The name chosen for the space refers to one of the key figures responsible for consolidating integrated operations in Brazil. Mário Santos, who participated in the space's inauguration, began his career at Chesf in the 1960s.
The professional was part of the technical coordination team that led to the interconnection of regional systems and worked in companies such as Eletrobras and Eletronorte, in addition to leading the implementation of the ONS (National System Operator) in 1998.
The initiative seeks to recognize the contribution of professionals who participated in the institutional construction of the electricity sector and the creation of the centralized operating model adopted in the country.
