Scatec has begun commercial operation of the 142 MW Rio Urucuia solar power plant in Minas Gerais. This is the Norwegian company's third photovoltaic project in Brazil, bringing its total installed capacity in the country to 885 MW.
The project is expected to generate approximately 321 GWh per year. About 75% of the projected production is tied to a ten-year power purchase agreement with Statkraft.
The remaining volume will be traded on the Free Energy Market through short, medium, and long-term contracts, with Scatec holding 100% ownership of the project and being responsible for operation and maintenance services, as well as the management of the plant's assets.
“As our first plant in the Southeast submarket, where there is strong demand for energy, Rio Urucuia contributes to diversifying our presence in Brazil,” says Terje Pilskog, CEO of Scatec.
In total, the project cost approximately R$ 506 million, with financing from Banco do Nordeste. The expectation is that the new solar complex will prevent the emission of approximately 21 tons of CO₂ per year.
