President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated that the world needs to "move away from fossil fuels" and defended the urgency of fair climate finance and full compliance with the Paris Agreement as central pillars of the global response to the climate crisis.
The statement was made this Thursday (6), during the Climate Summit, in Belém (PA) — an event that brings together leaders and representatives from more than 100 countries and marks the political opening of COP30, the UN conference on climate change that will take place between November 10 and 21, also in the capital of Pará.
“Humanity has been aware of the impact of climate change for more than 35 years, since the publication of the first IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report. But it took 28 COPs to recognize the need to move away from fossil fuels and stop deforestation. And another year to admit, in Baku, the need to increase climate finance to US$1,3 trillion,” the president said.
Lula stated that Belém will honor the legacies of the last two COPs, emphasizing the urgency of concrete measures. "Accelerating the energy transition and protecting nature are the two most effective ways to curb global warming," he declared.
During his speech, the president also highlighted that the Paris Agreement remains the main framework for global climate governance, but that countries are still failing to transform promises into real actions.
"We cannot abandon the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting warming to 1,5 degrees Celsius," he stated. "Our objective with this leaders' summit in Belém is to address the differences," he emphasized.
Lula also emphasized that, thanks to the climate pact, the world has managed to move away from the most alarming projections, which indicated an increase of up to 5°C in the planet's average temperature by the end of the century.
"I am convinced that, despite our difficulties and contradictions, we need a roadmap to, in a planned and fair way, reverse deforestation, overcome dependence on fossil fuels, and mobilize the resources necessary for these objectives," said the president.
