TIM was chosen by AXIA Energia to deploy 4G and 5G networks in 20 of the company's hydroelectric plants in different regions of the country. The project foresees an initial investment of R$ 18 million until the end of 2026, focusing on connectivity, digitization of operations, and expansion of coverage in remote areas.
The main initiative will be developed at the Itumbiara Power Plant, located on the border between Minas Gerais and Goiás, which is expected to become the first hydroelectric plant in Brazil with a private 5G network, according to the companies.
At the facility, the infrastructure will enable applications focused on automation and operational monitoring, including IoT (Internet of Things) sensors, real-time connected drones, robots and autonomous vehicles for inspection, as well as remote equipment control and continuous monitoring of operational data.
According to TIM, in addition to the 4G and 5G networks, the installation of two mobile antennas with solar panels is planned for the Furnas and Itumbiara power plants.
According to Fábio Costa, B2B vice president of TIM Brasil, the initiative follows the advancement of private connectivity in the electricity sector, a movement aimed at increasing operational efficiency, security, and the capacity for remote monitoring of generation assets.
The solution also aims to expand connectivity in hard-to-reach areas within the power plants. After the completion of the pilot project in Itumbiara, the Santo Antônio and Tucuruí power plants should be the next to receive private 5G infrastructure.
