Energy ministers from several countries failed to reach a consensus on climate action, according to Reuters. The two-day meeting of the IEA (International Energy Agency) was marked by statements from US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, who questioned net neutrality ambitions.
Unlike previous years, the ministers did not issue a joint statement at the end of the negotiations, highlighting divisions surrounding the energy transition.
Countries such as the United Kingdom, France, and Spain have reinforced the importance of renewable energy sources as part of their national strategies.
A summary of the meeting prepared by President Sophie Hermans, the Dutch Minister of Energy, highlighted the focus on energy security.
Despite the differences, the document pointed out that "the vast majority of ministers emphasized the importance of the energy transition to combat climate change," aligning themselves with the global commitment to net-zero emissions defined at COP28 in Dubai.
The report also acknowledged the continued role of oil and gas in the energy mix, indicating that the global transition to clean energy still faces significant political and economic challenges.
