The United Kingdom and the State of California signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Monday (16) to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the areas of clean energy, decarbonization and technological innovation.
The agreement establishes a flexible framework for collaboration to promote sustainable development and protect the natural environment, focusing on energy efficiency, emissions reduction, and technological research.
The memorandum details priority sectors, including clean energy technologies such as offshore wind power and low-carbon hydrogen, long-duration energy storage, modernization of electricity grids, decarbonization of buildings and transportation, as well as support for the bioeconomy, circular economy, and climate-smart agriculture.
The document designates the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and the California Environmental Protection Agency as central points of coordination.
Among the planned activities are political dialogues, exchange of best practices, seminars, workshops, joint events, and academic collaboration to accelerate research, development, and implementation of clean technologies.
O Memorandum of Understanding Participation is voluntary and does not create any binding legal obligations or rights. All costs arising from the activities will be borne by the participants individually, subject to the availability of personnel, funds, and resources.
The agreement has an initial validity of five years, and may be modified or terminated by written notice given 30 days in advance.
The agreement reinforces legislative targets for carbon neutrality, with the UK aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050 and California achieving carbon neutrality by 2045.
